There were several questions on Askville this morning from guys who were dumped by women who tried to let them down easily. This is, of course, the most refined torture that a woman can inflict on a man; the ultimate punishment she can mete out to some poor idiot for committing the capital crime of not being compatible with her, or not attractive enough to suit her tastes.

Here's the advice I gave one suffering fellow:

There isn't quite a question here. But I'd say that she as trying to let you down easily. Unfortunately many women seem to prefer to try to dump a man without hurting his feelings. This is, of course, impossible; you can't dump someone without hurting them badly. That's why it's called "dumping"!

The problem is that when they try to phrase it so you'll still like them after they break up with you, they make it sound as if there's still a chance that things could work out for you two romantically. But there isn't. THERE IS NO CHANCE SHE WILL EVER, EVER be romantically involved with you again. At most, she might give you a few signs of affection out of pity and in a misguided attempt to cushion the pain of her dumping you. That gesture could include anything from a kiss on the cheek to one last instance of pity sex (if she's the trashy type). But in any case, it's over forever. It's time for you to move on.

I'm sorry; I know it hurts. And it will hurt, a lot, for a long time. But there are other women out there, and in time you'll find one. Get active, throw yourself into new projects, learn new things, try new things. In time, the pain will fade and your life will go on.

Cell phone

Our AT&T cell phone contract expired a while ago, so we can upgrade our phones and make some changes. I recently discovered that as a Blue Cross employee I get a 19% discount on AT&T cell service; we'll have to put our service in my name instead of Teri's, but that's no problem.

Here's the question: Should I get an iPhone? I'd get a Google Android phone if I could, but AT&T doesn't have a Google phone. I got a demo of sorts from a co-worker of the iPhone, and it looked pretty cool (even though I hate Macs). Anyone out there have an iPhone? Or can you recommend a better alternative?

Wee Folk

Today is Sebastian's last day of summer camp at Wee Folk. That's the day care that he went to when he was young, too. He was very sad this morning, because he knew it was his last day.

There's going to be a pizza party there next Tuesday, and he really wants to spend the day there. Teri's going to see if it is possible.

I was reading The Horse and His Boy to Sebastian last night (we recently finished The Silver Chair; he liked it very much), and he suddenly asked me to make chocolate chip cookie bars for his friends at Wee Folk the next day. It was nearly 9 o'clock, and we didn't even have all the ingredients, so I couldn't. I felt bad about that.

Ah, life! So many little sorrows. I wish I could shield him from them.

Another late night; I got into bed almost exactly at midnight. By coincidence, I read in the news this morning that lack of sleep is closely associated with the development of diabetes. Not good.

But it was a fun evening. I was part of a three-person party for one quest; it was difficult, and we died several times, but eventually we succeeded. I picked my first talent, Frostbite, which gives my Chill effects a 5% chance to cause freezing. It's already proven useful.

Frost Nova was useful too, as a sort of last resort. It freezes enemies to the ground. The problem is that it takes so long before you can use it again! So if you're facing several enemies and you're on your own, it's best to Frost Nova and run like hell.

I met my first elite creatures, and killed them.

As for my Tauren, I took a break from the quest that kept killing him, and went on a vision quest instead. It wasn't bad. He's certainly becoming more effective.
