I've done a number of voice posts, but almost no text posts about this yet. So now I'll catch up.

I started feeling horribly sick on Friday. Painful coughs and a horrible windy feeling in my chest. This pissed me off to no end, since I'd not even gotten over my last cold.

On Sunday morning I was resting in bed. Sebastian came in and asked me to get him a drink of water. I went downstairs to get it, and on the way back my lower back was suddenly in agony. I made it back upstairs, barely, and gave Sebastian his drink; then I collapsed into my bed.

As the day progressed the pain got worse and worse. Soon I was unable to stand, then I wasn't even able to sit up. I used to have back spasms, a long time ago; this felt like that, but much more intense. Teri suggested taking me to the hospital, but I hoped that if I rested as much as possible, my back would get better in time for me to go to work on Tuesday.

Sunday Night (New Year's Eve)

I started the night lying on towels on the bathroom floor. I couldn't walk; I could barely crawl, and that only by resting my weight on my elbows and forearms as well as my hands. The pain was unbelievable.

And the night was endless. I remember waking up on the bathroom floor, shivering uncontrollably in the cold; crawling painfully over to the living room, dragging myself up onto the couch, only to wake soon thereafter soaked in sweat; then realizing that I had to go to the bathroom, and making the tortuous crawl there all while wondering if I'd make it in time.

It was one of the worst nights of my life, I'd say. And that was how I welcomed 2007.

Monday
The next day I spent mostly on the couch. Incidentally, throughout this time I was taking 600 mg doses of ibuprofen; they might as well have been sugar pills for all the good they did me, though. I also called my doctor's office, and the nurse practitioner on call called in a prescription for cyclobenzaprine to my local CVS. Teri went and picked it up; again, though, it was totally without effect.

The night was bad.

Tuesday
Today I gave in. I still could barely stand; that was a marginal improvement, but I could only move by supporting my weight on other objects. The slightest movement had me gasping in agony. So I called in to my doctor, and they made an appointment for me to be seen at 11:40.

Teri drove the three of us up. By this time the pain had gotten so bad that even just sitting in the car was extremely painful - and it was an hour and fifteen minute drive.

We dropped Sebastian off at my parents' and then we went to the doctor. Teri dropped me at the entrance while she went to park the car.

As usual, my doctor saw me before I was even able to read one paragraph. She checked me over, and confirmed my self-diagnosis; no disk problem, no sciatica, just some sort of deep muscle or tendon spasm. She prescribed Vicodin, an even higher dose of ibuprofen, and bed rest.

We had lunch nearby and I took the first pill right away. Supposedly Vicodin can cause drowsiness, but as usual I noticed absolutely no side effects. But by the time we finished eating, the pain was considerably reduced.

I can't tell you how good that felt.

Now I can walk; there's still a lot of pain, and I'm very stiff, but I can walk. And I can sit up. Believe me, I'd have to be pretty damned sick to stay away from the computer for as long as I did!

With any luck after a day or two of rest and Vicodin I should be at 90% or better.
