According to the New York Times today, Obama is not going to be investigating or prosecuting the crimes of the Bush Administration - despite what he said on the campaign trail. I am shocked, shocked.

Even so, I had to make a comment:

He hasn't even been SWORN IN yet, and he has already betrayed his oath of office (to uphold the Constitution, if anyone remembers). Can we impeach him before he gets sworn in, too?

Why would he and the Democratic leadership want to help cover up the crimes of the Bush Administration? I have the sneaking suspicion that it's because they plan to commit the same sort of abuses too - wholesale warrantless spying on Americans, the abolition of habeas corpus, and torture.

The American Dream continues to turn into a nightmare. This is NOT the change I hoped for.

If there's anyone out there who'd be interested in being on a panel about the RuneQuest/Basic Roleplaying system (and the many strange things that have been going on recently and in the last thirty-odd years with that system), please let Programming know - at the moment, I'm the only one on that panel.

It's currently scheduled for Sunday at 5 PM.

Footfall Footfall by Larry Niven

My review

rating: 4 of 5 stars

A large and well-written novel about an alien invasion and planetary catastrophe. Not top-notch Niven, and his tendency to use confusing polysyllabic alien names gets to be a bit much (as it often does in his work), but it's an exciting and interesting book with sympathetic characters and a well-handled plot.

It does end rather abruptly, though. I liked it better after the third or fourth re-reading.

In a "pro-life" future, fetuses have been given full citizenship. By law, transparent windows are installed in all pregnant mothers so that the fetus can directly observe the outside world. A harness with robot arms is attached to every mother, wired so that the fetus can control the arms. Perhaps a fetus-controlled shock device is wired to every mother so that the fetus can force her to walk where the fetus demands.

The title of the story: "A Womb With A View".
